Houston, We Still Have a Problem
Defensive End J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans have parted ways after ten seasons. The former Defensive Player of the Year requested to be released from the organization.
While the Texans have granted Watt’s request, they still have another situation on their hands: Deshaun Watson. Houston’s QB requested a trade weeks ago and the franchise has stated that they do not intend to trade “the player.”
J.J. Watt is the latest person to escape Houston’s sinking ship. The team traded DE Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. Their star WR, DeAndre Hopkins, was traded to the Arizona Cardinals last offseason. The Texans also fired their head coach, Bill O’Brien this season.
The entire league is patiently awaiting the situation with Watson to play out, assuming that the team is eventually forced to let him go. Of course, he could hold out during the 2021 season if Houston decides not to trade him during the offseason.
Releasing him would not be the way to go and it’s safe to say that this is not an option for the Texans. No matter what happens, the way this organization is handling this situation is interesting. If they don’t end up exposing themselves, it is likely that the players will do it for them.
